OVERALL SUMMARY
This
section provides a summary of three key components of the bulletin,
which
include October to December 2004 climate outlook, the climate
conditions during
August 2004 and the impacts associated with the August 2004 conditions
as well
as those expected from the climate
outlook.
3.1
Outlook
for October to December 2004
During October to December 2004, much of
Burundi,
Uganda and Somalia, southern and northeastern Sudan, northern Eritrea,
western
and central Ethiopia, southern Djibouti, coastal, central and western
Kenya,
northeastern and western Tanzania as well as southern Rwanda are likely
to
experience near to above normal rainfall.
Central Sudan, northern and eastern Ethiopia, western Somalia,
northern
Kenya, southwestern Uganda, northwestern Rwanda, eastern Burundi and
much of
Tanzania are likely to experience near to below normal rainfall (Fig. 7)
3.2 Climate
conditions during August 2004
Rainfall
activities during August 2004 were concentrated in the central and
western
parts of the northern sector.
3.2.1 Northern
sector
Rainfall amounts above 200mm were recorded
over
western Ethiopia extending to southwestern Sudan resulting to near
normal
conditions with isolated areas experiencing very wet conditions.
However,
isolated areas experienced driest conditions on record since 1961 for
the month
of August.
3.2.2 Equatorial
sector
The western parts of the sector recorded
rainfall
amounts in the range 150 to 200mm resulting to isolated areas
experiencing
wettest conditions on record since 1961. Much of the eastern parts of
the
sector received rainfall amounts below 50mm resulting to dry conditions.
3.2.3 Southern
sector
Dry conditions prevailed over much of the
sector.
