The Figure
shows the rainfall distribution in April 2003
. There was a general decline in rainfall amounts over the
western parts of the southern sector though significant rainfall (40-100
mm) was sustained over the western parts of the southern sector. The decline
signified the start of the gradual withdrawal of the summer rainfall season
over the sector. The eastern parts of the sector recorded low rainfall that
fell below 40 mm.
A significant pick up in rainfall was observed over the equatorial sector
with most locations experiencing rainfall in excess of 40 mm. This was indicative
of the establishment of the long rains season over the sector. However, the
bulk of the rainfall was observed in the second half of the month. Rainfall
exceeding 100 mm was recorded over much of Kenya, southern Uganda and northwestern
Tanzania. Low rainfall amounts prevailed over southeastern and coastal areas
of Kenya as well as northeastern Tanzania to signify a further delay in the
onset and possible failure of the long rains season. The northern sector
remained generally dry as is characteristic of April. However, rainfall in
the range 40 - 200 mm occurred over the Ethiopian highlands for the third
consecutive month.
