The Figure shows the spatial patterns of the drought severity index for August 2004.

The Drought Severity Index patterns for August 2004 indicate that isolated areas in the northern and equatorial sectors experienced wettest conditions on record since 1961. However, dry conditions were observed over the eastern parts of the northern and equatorial sectors with isolated areas in the northern sector experiencing driest conditions on record since 1961.

DROUGHT SEVERITY
The drought severity is derived from indices which consider all observations which are less than 25% (first quartile) of the ranked historical records to be dry while those which are more than 75% (third quartile) are considered wet .
