EXPECTED WEATHER IMPACTS ON AGRICULTURE DURING THE MONTH OF JUNE-SEPTEMBER
2003.
7.4 Expected impacts during June to September 2003
In the areas where near to above normal rainfall is anticipated, the following
impacts are likely:
- Increased availability of water resources for domestic
use and industrial production as well as hydropower generation;
- Improved crop and livestock production;
- Localized flooding in low-lying areas that may result
in soil erosion as well as disruption of transport and communications;
- Risk of the outbreak of water related diseases.
On the other hand, rainfall stress would continue in some of the areas where
near to below normal is expected with the likelihood of the following impacts:
- Further threat to hydropower generation and utilization
due to continued decline in water levels in the hydro catchment areas;
- Cases of malnutrition and related diseases and continued
need for food aid;
- Persistent water scarcity for domestic, livestock
and industrial use;
- Poor browse and pasture for livestock that may result
in migration of pastoralists.
