ABOUT KENJOM- Location, Mission, History

              
The Kenya Network of Journalists and Meteorologists (KENJOM) forms part of the Network of Climate Journalists for the Greater Horn of Africa (NECJOGHA). It espouses the aspirations of NECJOGHA and adopts them to the Kenyan situation.c.

Membership

Membership to KENJOM is open to Kenyan journalists and meteorologists. A committee was put in place to kick off the organization.

Location.

KENJOM is a major branch of the Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD) of the Ministry of Information, Transport and Communication. It is located approximately eight kilometers, west of Nairobi City Centre along Ngong Road at Dagoretti Corner, within the premises of KMD Headquarters. Public transport is sufficiently catered for through a variety of commuter buses and mini-buses.

Realization of capacity in all media outlets to access weather and climate information and report it in an accurate and understandable manner to the Kenya public.

Mission

To bring the media and meteorological fraternity closer so as to build dissemination capacity for weather and climate information and products.

 

History

KENJOM was formed during the 10th Climate Outlook Forum for the Greater Horn of Africa organized by the Drought Monitoring Center from 26 to 28 August 2002 in Nairobi, Kenya. The objective of the network is to enhance interaction between climate scientists and journalists in order to enable dissemination of climate information to users in a way that it is easily understood and applied. At the workshop many media houses were represented such as the Standard Newspaper, Kenya Times, Nation Newspaper and Television and the Kenya Broadcasting Corporation.
